A few weeks ago, the Worser Bay Boating Club in Wellington was buzzing with energy as teachers and educators gathered for a hands-on workshop to explore the Moanamana programme—a nationwide initiative aimed at empowering rangatahi (young people) to protect and restore Aotearoa New Zealand's marine ecosystems through science, culture, and technology.
Digital Tools in Action
The event provided a unique opportunity for educators to engage directly with marine monitoring tools, including the Moanamana mobile app, and to learn how they can be integrated into classroom learning. From collecting real-time ocean health data to using technology to support science-based storytelling, the workshop offered practical insights into how digital tools are enriching marine education in schools.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the educators who attended. Your enthusiasm, questions, and ideas are vital in shaping a future generation of informed, passionate ocean guardians. By participating, you’re helping create a nationwide movement that brings together science, Māori knowledge, and hands-on environmental work, all within schools across the country.
Collaboration Driving Change
The Moanamana programme is the result of a collaborative effort involving visionary educators and marine advocates, including Yachting New Zealand, the University of Otago’s NZ Marine Studies Centre, the Southern Skies Coastal People Centre for Research Excellence, the Black Foils (the New Zealand SailGP Team) and the Live Ocean Foundation. The app and digital infrastructure were developed in partnership with TEAM Cloud, blending scientific rigour, real-time environmental insights, and sovereign cloud technology to empower students across Aotearoa New Zealand.
TEAM Cloud proudly powers the Moanamana app with our sovereign cloud infrastructure, ensuring the security, privacy, and accessibility of data gathered by tamariki and rangatahi. The app allows students to log marine observations, share data with others around the country, and see the impact of their local restoration efforts—building a national picture of marine health through local action.
Together, these organisations are helping embed environmental stewardship into our education system in a way that is community-led, culturally grounded, and future-focused.
