The intersection of technology, culture, and values is becoming increasingly important as digital systems play a bigger role in our lives. One critical conversation happening in Aotearoa is around Māori Data Sovereignty, the idea that Māori communities should have control and authority over data that relates to them.
Recently, TEAM Cloud's Co-founder Craig Hampson joined tech leaders Dr Karaitiana Taiuru, Amber Craig, and Lee Timutimu for an important kōrero on this topic. The discussion explored how Māori values, perspectives, and aspirations intersect with technology, particularly around data and AI.
'Sovereignty' means different things in different contexts. In sovereign cloud technology, it’s more specifically about control, access, and ownership. In Māori Data Sovereignty, it extends much further, encompassing people, planet, and collective benefit—with space for different iwi and groups to interpret it in their own way.
Māori communities, like many others, want leadership and representation that can provide guidance on how to safely and meaningfully engage with technologies like AI and data. Building trust and digital confidence is essential for this journey.
This is an evolving space with differing views on whether to build on existing frameworks or forge entirely new ones. It’s a fascinating discussion, reflecting the balance between past, present, and future values.
