The successful migration from AWS Sydney delivers 48% cost savings, improved data sovereignty and local support for Inland Revenue’s content platform.
In June 2025, Inland Revenue, one of New Zealand’s largest government departments, successfully completed the repatriation of its enterprise content management system of record, known as Stax, from AWS in Sydney to TEAM Cloud’s sovereign infrastructure in Auckland.
The migration, carried out over a focused 24-hour cutover window, saw 14TB of data, equating to over 9 million production objects, securely transferred across the Tasman by TEAM Cloud’s in-house migration specialists.
“When our long-standing partner, TEAM IM, approached us with a recommendation to repatriate our unstructured content repositories from Sydney to TEAM Cloud in Auckland, we recognised the savings available. They also highlighted some of the added benefits of repatriation such as sovereign control over content, sustainability and local 24x7 Wellington-based support. Of particular interest to Inland Revenue was latency performance and security. Both these bars were met with the TEAM Cloud offering.”

A Win for Sovereignty, Security and Savings
By moving to TEAM Cloud’s dual isolated regions in Auckland, Inland Revenue has not only improved the control and locality of its content, it has also achieved cost savings of over 48 percent compared to its previous hyperscale cloud fees.
Additional benefits identified in the shift include:
- Full sovereign control over content and workloads
- Improved sustainability by leveraging local Toitū Net Carbon Zero data centres
- Wellington-based 24x7 support, ensuring proximity and responsiveness
- Enhanced security and latency performance, meeting Inland Revenue’s high operational standards
A Trusted Partnership and a Proven Cloud
Inland Revenue’s migration marks the third major central government agency workload to be repatriated from Australia to TEAM Cloud since 2024, collectively generating over $500,000 NZD in annual recurring savings for government. The move also reinforces New Zealand government’s broader goal of investing in local jobs, sovereign infrastructure, and a resilient national tech ecosystem.
“TEAM IM has been a trusted partner of Inland Revenue for over 10 years. With the introduction of TEAM Cloud, we were again able to proactively work with Inland Revenue to demonstrate additional value in fiscally constrained times.”
