REANNZ, a national provider of eResearch infrastructure to New Zealand’s research, education and innovation sectors, today announced a strategic partnership with TEAM Cloud, New Zealand's sovereign hyperscale cloud service. The partnership enables REANNZ member organisations, including universities, research institutes, and government agencies, to connect directly and securely into TEAM Cloud infrastructure over a private Layer 3 connection without traversing the public internet.

The collaboration brings together REANNZ's high-performance, purpose-built research and education network with TEAM Cloud's locally owned and operated sovereign cloud platform. For REANNZ members, this provides a faster, more predictable, and more secure pathway to sovereign cloud resources, with data remaining within New Zealand's borders at all times.

As a TEAM Cloud FastConnect Partner, REANNZ now offers its members the ability to use their existing high-performance REANNZ network connection to connect privately into TEAM Cloud. REANNZ manages the BGP peering into TEAM Cloud via a managed Layer 3 service, providing a seamless and resilient connection. This removes the need to expose workloads or data to the public internet and eliminates the requirement to manage complex network configurations.

REANNZ Chief Executive Amber McEwen says the partnership is about trust in how research data is handled:

“What matters to researchers and institutions is being able to move data safely and get on with their work. This partnership makes that simpler, while keeping data in New Zealand.”

Ian Rogers, Co-Founder of TEAM Cloud, says the partnership reflects a shared commitment to sovereign infrastructure:

"At TEAM Cloud we're committed to delivering a truly sovereign hyperscale cloud for New Zealand, and this partnership with REANNZ is a significant step in making that accessible to the research and education sector. REANNZ members work with some of the most sensitive and valuable data in the country — genomic research, climate science, national health data — and they deserve cloud infrastructure that meets their sovereignty and security requirements without compromise."

Connecting the Research Community to Sovereign Cloud

REANNZ connects New Zealand's universities, Crown Research Institutes, government agencies, and innovation-focused organisations to each other and to over 120 global research and education networks. With Cloud Connect, REANNZ members can leverage their existing high-performance network connection to reach cloud providers directly, bypassing the internet entirely for greater stability, predictability, and security.

With TEAM Cloud now available as a Cloud Connect destination, REANNZ members gain access to a Layer 3 managed FastConnect service into TEAM Cloud's OCI-based sovereign cloud platform. REANNZ manages the BGP peering, providing a resilient and seamless connection that presents TEAM Cloud as a natural extension of the member's own network environment, without requiring in-house expertise in cloud interconnect configuration.

Private Layer 3 Connectivity via REANNZ Cloud Connect

REANNZ members connect into TEAM Cloud over a secure, private Layer 3 path using the REANNZ network. BGP peering is fully managed by REANNZ, providing a resilient, low-latency connection without public internet exposure. TEAM Cloud becomes a seamless extension of the member's existing environment.

What This Means for New Zealand Research & Education

The research and education sector handles some of New Zealand's most sensitive and high-value data, from genomic and health research to geospatial and environmental data. Sovereign cloud infrastructure, combined with private network connectivity, gives these organisations the confidence to migrate workloads without compromising security, compliance, or data residency.

    • Data sovereignty— All data and workloads remain within New Zealand, on locally owned and operated infrastructure.
    • No public internet exposure— Private Layer 3 connectivity via the REANNZ network means traffic never touches the public internet.
    • Stable, predictable performance— Purpose-built research network infrastructure eliminates the variability of internet-based cloud access.
    • Simplified connectivity— REANNZ manages BGP peering; no complex network configuration required by the member.
    • OCI-grade hyperscale capability— Access to TEAM Cloud's full Oracle Cloud Infrastructure feature set, including compute, storage, database, containers, and AI services.
    • 24×7 local support— New Zealand-based teams at both REANNZ and TEAM Cloud providing end-to-end expertise.

For institutions already connected to REANNZ, including all New Zealand universities, most Crown Research Institutes, and many government agencies, enabling TEAM Cloud access requires no new physical connectivity. Members can activate the service through the REANNZ Cloud Connect programme and be operational with minimal lead time.
