Scary Cyber Security Stats You Should Know (2026)

Cyber threats are no longer rare, random events. They are becoming regular occurrences for New Zealand organisations of all sizes. With more critical systems moving online and sensitive data stored in the cloud, attackers are finding more ways in, and the damage they cause is becoming harder to recover from.

So just how serious is the situation?

The latest insights from the Kordia New Zealand Cyber Security Report 2026 reveal the scale and impact of the threats facing Kiwi organisations. The numbers speak for themselves.

Here are three statistics from the report that highlight just how widespread and damaging these attacks have become.

1. More Common Than You Think

44% of New Zealand businesses experienced a successful cyber-attack in the past year. That is a little under half.
Of those, 61% reported significant business impact. That included financial losses, operational disruption, reputational damage, and legal fallout.

Cyber incidents are not just happening. They are having real consequences. For many organisations, it is no longer a matter of if, but when.

2. The Cost of Compromise

Among large businesses that suffered a breach in 2025 , 17% had personally identifiable information (PII) stolen. That means customer or employee data such as names, addresses, and financial details were exposed or sold.

Data protection is not just about compliance. It is about trust. And a breach can break that trust instantly.

3. Cloud Misconfigurations Can Drag Out Recovery

Cloud technology can be transformative, but only when implemented securely. The report found that 16% of cloud-related attacks in New Zealand were caused by misconfigurations, such as incorrect access settings or unpatched systems.

Recovery from these incidents can take months:

  • One third of affected organisations took more than two  months to fully recover.

That is a long time to spend dealing with the consequences of something preventable.

4. Malware - free attacks on the rise

Over the past year it has been seen that these attackers have been favouring the use of malware-free techniques. According to the Global Threat Report 2025, they observed more then 70% of the intrusions they observed were malware-free relying on legitimate administrative tools, stolen credentials, and hands-on-keyboard activity.

These can go unnoticed by typical system protections who are looking out for malware. These techniques blend into the average IT activity with the absence of obvious malware indicators.

Why It Matters

These statistics are not just numbers. They serve as a wake-up call that highlights the growing need for proactive, ongoing security.

Security is not a one-time project or a box to tick. It is a mindset that must be embedded into how organisations operate every day. That is why TEAM Cloud is built with sovereignty, visibility, and control at its core. We work closely with our customers to ensure that security is integrated into every layer of their cloud environment from the start.

Next Steps

The reality is clear. Cyber-attacks are becoming more frequent, recovery can take months, and common issues like cloud misconfigurations are leaving organisations vulnerable. At the same time, the stakes are getting higher. When sensitive data is compromised, the impact is not just technical. It can affect operations, finances, and reputation.

Whether you are fully in the cloud or just starting your digital transformation, now is the time to take security seriously. When the risks are this high, being vigilant is essential.
